Quarantine is in full swing the world over and we are in desperate need of stay-at-home entertainment. To this end, I have decided to create a community-generated list of stories we can all consume. These can be books, movies, TV, podcasts - anything! If a particular song or album is particularly narrative-y, feel free to drop that too!
I’ll start us off with a heap of suggestions of my own :)
Another one of the most fantastic pieces of sci-fi I've read. The movie, although obviously lacking with respect to the book, was pretty damn good too.
This is my all time favourite and contains the story of The Shawshank Redemption (coincidentally my favourite movie). It's my go-to recommendation when someone doesn't know what genre they want to read but do want to pick up a book.
This book is a collection of essays (creative non-fiction) so I was *very* surprised when I realised I liked the premise. I haven't gotten myself a copy yet, but fully intend to.
You Owe Me a Murder by Eileen Cook (Mystery/Thriller)
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (book or show)
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
With Malice by Eileen Cook (Mystery/Thriller)
I haven't read this one yet, but the premise seems promising and I love the author.
Good Omens (the show or book) by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen
Forever and a Day: A James Bond Novel by Anthony Horowitz
Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Eliezer Yudkowsky (suggested by @nishkawithnoinsta on Instagram)
If Tomorrow Comes by Sidney Sheldon
Under the Knife by Kelly Parsons
Creativity Inc. by Ed Catmull and Amy Wallace (this book is about the story of Pixar)
Strange Weather by Joe Hill
I haven't read this one, but I really like the premise of its four novellas.
Artemis by Andy Weir
This book is one of the best pieces of sci-fi I've ever read.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Another one of the most fantastic pieces of sci-fi I've read. The movie, although obviously lacking with respect to the book, was pretty damn good too.
Different Seasons by Stephen King
This is my all time favourite and contains the story of The Shawshank Redemption (coincidentally my favourite movie). It's my go-to recommendation when someone doesn't know what genre they want to read but do want to pick up a book.
The Outsider by Stephen King
I found the ending a bit weak, but other than that, thoroughly enjoyed this book.
We Learn Nothing by Tim Kreider
This book is a collection of essays (creative non-fiction) so I was *very* surprised when I realised I liked the premise. I haven't gotten myself a copy yet, but fully intend to.
Saint X by Alexis Schaitkin (mystery/thriller)
Again, I haven't read this one, but it's got a gripping plot and I can't wait to read it.
Man With a Plan (on Amazon Prime Video)
A light-hearted comedy starring Matt LeBlanc
The Truth (podcast)
Welcome to Night Vale (podcast)
Books:
The Palace of Illusions - Chitra Devakaruni
1984 - George Orwell (classic)
Karna’s Wife - Kavita Kane
Rich Dad Poor Dad - Robert T.
A thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini (my favourite of all time)
Some comforting, uplifting films: Good boys, A beautiful day in the neighbourhood, Paterson, Where is the friend's home, Gifted, Long Shot :)
The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
The Battle of Algiers (1966)
I Am Not Okay With This (on Netflix)
Interesting list. I look forward to getting into it.
One Day at a Time (Netflix)
Umbrella Academy (Netflix)
Peaky Blinders (Netflix)
Killing Eve (Disney+)
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
- The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas (classic)
- Brief Answers to the Big Questions by Stephen Hawking is an interesting read
- All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (another classic)
Happy reading!
